  • Operating track record. Candidates run existing, active enterprises — not concept-stage proposals.
  • Cohort cohesion. Groups that already collaborate are prioritized, so training and capital reinforce a working network.
  • Willingness to formalize. Candidates commit to incorporation and tax compliance as a condition of advancing.
  • Independent committee. Community and sector representatives sit alongside ASSANTI staff; no single party decides alone.
  • Right of appeal. Unsuccessful applicants can contest a decision through a documented grievance process.

Proof before scale.

Fresh Connect operates a solar-powered bread distribution network in Bujumbura's Kinanira district, linking independent bakeries to entrepreneur-run kiosks. It is an existing, operating business — not a concept — and its affiliated bakeries and kiosk operators are the Academy's first cohort.

Bakeries already scaling from roughly 200 to 600+ units a day possess much of the operational capacity institutional buyers require. ASSANTI Capital's training and selection process close the remaining gap: registration, formal bidding, and delivery at contract scale.

The DRC's population is roughly ten times Burundi's, with a large mining sector, a substantial UN and humanitarian institutional footprint, and a subcontracting law that legally reserves defined sectors to Congolese-owned SMEs — a structural advantage the Academy trains graduates to use.

ASSANTI Capital enters the DRC only after the Burundi cohort demonstrates a full cycle from training to a first contract award — validating the model in a smaller market before capital scales into a larger, higher-variance one.
